Colorectal cancer is often detected at an early stage and the treatment at this stage can cure the disease. There are also steps you can take to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

What is intestine?

Intestine is the longest organ in the digestive system. It has two parts:
• The small intestine, where food is absorbed; and
• the large intestine where water and salt absorbed
There are two parts of the large intestine which are the colon and rectum.

Alimentary Tract

What is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer is a cancerous tumor that usually starts in the lining of the large intestine. It can grow old there, before spreading to other parts of the body. Therefore, early detection of cancer has a big opportunity for it to
be cured. Chances of survival were 90%, if the disease is detected at the early stage.

How many people suffered from Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer which affects men and the third most common in women in Malaysia.

Who is at risk of Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer can occur at any age, but the risk is higher if you are fifty years old and above.

The risk of getting colon cancer you get higher if you:
• have a family history of colon cancer.
• never had inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's colitis ulcers or colitis) more than eight years.

If you have the above factors, talk to your doctor about the risk of colon cancer.

The Symptoms of Colon Cancer

Not all colon cancer showed signs or symptoms but you should see your doctor if you experience any of the following:
• Out of blood or blood from the anus after defecation;
• Significant changes in bowel habits: for example, more frequent remove large water or liquid stool, frequent constipation and / or feel more often to pass larger than normal;
• feeling satisfied after a bowel movement;
• abdominal pain;
• weight loss without apparent reason; and
• feelings of tiredness, weakness or shortness of breath for no reason.

Symptoms may be due to iron deficiency anemia. This type of anemia can be caused by colon cancer. Individuals who are forty years are on the need to observe warning signs of colon cancer. If you have one of the signs of colon cancer above, please see a doctor who will refer you to run several time of tests. If the test results show the presence of colon cancer, early treatment can save your life.

Screening Tests for Colon Cancer

Colorectal cancer screening tests involve testing of individuals who do not have signs of bowel cancer. Screening using the Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) or stool occult blood test is recommended for healthy individuals aged fifty years onwards.

Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT)

FOBT is a simple test to identify early signs of colon cancer. This involves taking a sample of stool or feces by using the test kit. Samples taken at home and finally sent to a laboratory for analysis. FOBT will determine if there is blood in the feces (blood cannot be seen with the naked eye). Blood in the stool can be caused by polyps (growths on the inside of the intestine that can turn into cancer) or caused by a bleeding colon cancer. If there is blood in the stool, more tests should be done to identify the source of the bleeding.

Remember that colon cancer has a high chance (90%) to be healed if detected early. Polyps detected by FOBT can be removed before they turn into cancer.

Where can I get FOBT?

Men and women over the age of fifty years should see a doctor to undergo FOBT every two years.

Reducing the risk of Colon Cancer

You can help reduce the risk of colon cancer by:
• eating nutritious foods, including consuming more vegetables and fruits and reduce your intake of animal fat.
• maintain a healthy weight.
• regular exercise.
• non-smoking.
• reduce the drinking of alcohol.

By adhering to the guidance given does not mean you will miss out
colon cancer, but it can reduce your risk and also provide many
other health benefits.

CANCER PREVENTION

Most people do not realize that cancer can be prevented in many cases.
